A Warm Welcome To May!

May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, a significant period dedicated to shedding light on mental health challenges and promoting the importance of seeking help. Let’s face it, life can be stressful and sometimes overwhelming. We encounter stressors from various angles. We are balancing work, relationships, and everything in between. It’s natural to undergo moments of anxiety, sadness, or feeling overwhelmed. Amidst all these, it is important to focus on our mental and emotional well-being.

The Myth people have about mental health

1.Myth #1: Only crazy people struggle with mental health.

Fact: Mental health is something we all have, just like physical health. It’s normal to have ups and downs, and it doesn’t mean you’re weak if you’re struggling.

2. Myth #2: Self-care is selfish.

Fact: Nope! Taking care of yourself is important. You can’t help anyone else if you’re not okay yourself.

3. Myth#3: Children don’t experience mental health challenges.

Fact: Children and teens can have mental health issues too. Things like anxiety and depression can affect young people.

Here are a few things to note

1.Mental health is just as important as physical health. Take care of your mental well-being just like you would your physical health.

2. You’re not alone. Many people around the world go through mental health struggles and many also get the needed help and support.

3. It’s okay to ask for help. Seeking support from trusted friends, family, or professionals is a brave and important step.

4. Practice self-care. Simple activities like getting enough sleep, eating well, exercising, and taking breaks when necessary can greatly benefit your mental health.

5. Be kind to yourself. Don’t be too hard on yourself when facing challenges. Practice self-compassion

What can you do this May (and beyond) to prioritize your mental health?

1.Self-Care: Self-care is important. Engaging in activities that bring you joy, such as getting enough sleep, eating nutritious meals, staying physically fit, and spending quality time with loved ones can improve your well-being.

2.Educate yourself: Understanding mental health can help you take proactive action towards achieving improved mental and emotional well-being, recognize warning signs when someone around you needs support, and access appropriate help when needed.

3.Seek Professional Help: If you’re struggling with mental health challenges, don’t hesitate to seek professional help. Amani Health is here to provide personalized wellness options tailored to your needs.

4.Reduce The Stressors: Take steps to identify and minimize sources of stress in your life wherever possible. This could mean reevaluating your schedules or adopting healthy coping methods to better handle stress.

How To Support Someone Struggling with Mental Health Challenges

Supporting someone struggling with mental health challenges can make a difference in their life and overall well-being. Mental health challenges can include but are not limited to chronic stress, anxiety, depression, grief, post traumatic stress disorder, postpartum depression, autism, ADHD and many more.

Here are some ways to offer support:

  • Listen: Be there to listen when they want to talk. Just listening without judging can be a big help.
  • Be empathetic. Do not dismiss their feelings or emotions.
  • Be patient: Healing is a process. Be patient and avoid hastening their recovery process.
  • Encourage help: Encourage them to speak to a professional and even go ahead and book sessions for them. You can do that here…
  • Help out: Offer practical help with everyday tasks if they need it. Sometimes a small gesture like cooking a meal can mean a lot to them.

Throughout this month, we’ll be dishing out practical action steps to prioritize your overall well-being. You can read more on mental health here
