5 Gentle Ways to Navigate Grief and Loss
Mental Health Awareness continues through May, we’re hoping you’re putting your mental well-being first. This month, we discussed a few mental health challenges. These include grief, loss, and postpartum depression (PPD). These are common mental health struggles that can make you really feel alone. The good news? You’re not alone, and help is available.
Losing someone or something important really hurts. It’s completely okay to feel sad, angry, or numb. Everyone’s experience is different, but it’s important to let yourself feel those emotions. Talking to friends, family, or a therapist for support can be of great help. Also, finding ways to take care of yourself, whether it’s through exercise, or simply giving yourself some time to heal, can make a huge difference.
Here are some symptoms to watch for in someone experiencing grief and loss
- Sadness
- Numbness
- Feelings of emptiness
- Shock or disbelief
- Anger or irritability
- Guilt or regret
- Difficulty accepting the loss
- Navigating through Grief and Loss
While grief can feel overwhelming, there are strategies that can help individuals navigate this difficult journey and move towards healing:
1. Allow Yourself to Grieve: It’s important to give yourself permission to feel and express your emotions without judgment. There is no “right” way to grieve, and everyone’s journey is different.
2. Express Your Emotions: Find healthy ways for expressing your thoughts and feelings, such as journaling, art, music, or talking to a trusted friend. Bottling up emotions can prolong the grieving process and impact your mental wellbeing.
3. Take Care of Yourself: Prioritize self-care activities that help your physical and emotional well-being. This may seem difficult because you’re still navigating through grief but it’s very important. It may include getting enough sleep, eating nutritious foods, exercising, and practicing relaxation techniques like deep breathing or meditation.
4. Seek Support: Reach out to friends, family members, or a therapist who can offer emotional support and a listening ear. Support groups can also provide comfort and validation from others who have experienced similar losses.
